AWDF launches sector-wide Pay & Conditions study

A key piece of research has launched this month to capture data on current salaries and conditions within London’s social welfare advice sector.

The project, overseen by the AWDF programme’s Pay and Conditions task-and-finish group, and delivered by Myriad Research, will see the production, in 2025, of a report containing draft pay scales and conditions which can be used to inform activities within the advice sector, funding sector and beyond.

In the months ahead, there will be widespread engagement with the sector, and this engagement has already now begun with the launch of two online surveys – one aimed at organisational representatives, and one at individual advice sector workers.

Project lead with Myriad Research, Ben Hickman, said:

This project is not about what we think, it is about providing a voice to those working in the sector.  We would encourage everyone to complete the worker and organisation surveys so we can learn from you about what works best and what needs to change.

The surveys can be accessed via the following links:

Organisations: https://app.onlinesurveys.jisc.ac.uk/s/myriad/advice-organisations

AWDF programme manager, Chris Scutt, added:

The surveys’ responses will help us understand the situation currently, guide organisations in their approaches to pay and conditions, and support funders/commissioning bodies as they seek to understand the resources and strategies needed to fund advice services.

Our grateful thanks to London’s amazing advice sector workers and leaders for participating in the surveys, and helping ensure we collect responses from a representative and meaningful sample of the sector – which we can use as a springboard for exploring change collaboratively.

The individuals’ survey should take around 10 minutes to complete, and the organisational survey should take 10-15 minutes.

Individual respondents can be entered into a prize draw to win one of five £50 gift vouchers; while organisational respondents have the chance of winning one of three hampers full of goodies for their office.

Alongside the surveys we are also calling putting out a general call for evidence for practical examples and ideas from the advice sector regarding pay, benefits and conditions.  The research team would be particularly interested to hear about:

  • organisational charts/structures
  • pay and grading structures
  • innovative flexible working policies or employee wellbeing initiatives
  • unique approaches to employee development or career progression
  • disability friendly policy initiatives

We ask advice organisations to please email any evidence, links or information to Ben and the team at info@myriadresearch.co.uk.  (All of the provided information will be treated in confidence and anonymised before being shared by Myriad Research.  Anyone providing this evidence via email will also be included in the above prize draw).

The closing date for survey and narrative responses is 13 December 2024.

We invite you to keep checking our News page to find out how the project is progressing in the months ahead.
